THE WHY

Big Orange Heart

Giving Tuesday is a movement to create an international day of charitable giving at the beginning of the holiday season.

This year here at Big Orange Heart we wanted to both give something to the community and enable a way for the various funds and entities that offer “for good” services to the WordPress community to come together.  So we’re hosting a free online Summit featuring nine sessions across the day.

We will also be fundraising throughout the day and all money raised will be split evenly between the non-profits featuring across #DoSummitGood.

The Iceberg of Life: How I Manage the Ups and Downs
Life is like an iceberg. Too often we only see or share the good and great, the sunshine and success (or the above the surface stuff). But in reality, we all suffer and struggle at some point with things buried under the surface.

Particularly in the online world we are immersed in, it’s too easy to get lost, or to suffer in silence.

I will be sharing my personal experiences and mental health story and how I manage my iceberg in business and life.

Improving your SEO by improving your site structure
Site structure is an important element as well as a challenge in every SEO strategy. As search engines crawl through your site by following links, the structure of your website is a very important aspect of SEO. On top of that, your website should be structured in such a way that your audience finds what they are looking for on your website. In this talk, I am going to give you tips to improve your own site structure (and with that the SEO of your site!)

Resetting Your Professional Moral Compass
Observing business decisions we disagree with jolts our professional work and personal values out of alignment. In these situations, many feel powerless. However, the open-source community demonstrates how we can run successful businesses without compromising on our morals. In this session, Tess talks about how the WordPress community inspired and empowered her to become a freelance copywriter and marketing strategist who works with brands that are ethical, sustainable and create social impact.

Empowering Speakers: The Diverse Speaker Training group (#wpdiversity)
When more people from under-represented groups speak on stage, everybody benefits. At WordCamp Vancouver 2013 not many had applied. The following year, 3 times as many applied and fully half of selected speakers were from under-represented groups. This dramatic shift was no accident. My talk will share how we did it, the positive changes that resulted in our community, how the Diverse Speaker Training working group came to be, how we’ve helped many others achieve the same, and you can too.
